TINA TURNER

FINAL ALBUM CONCEPT: ANNA MAE

Tina Turner reconciles with her youth and the impact of domestic violence.
When I was assigned an influential artist at random to create a concept for a new album, I quickly learned that Tina Turner’s career and impact has few parallels. This powerhouse of a woman amassed so much success, yet experienced so many hardships.

MERCHANDISING

THE CONCEPT

Many associate the color red with hardness and strength, something Tina Turner became because she had no other choice. This album takes a look back at her childhood and her softer side, which was never before showcased in her discography.

MOODBOARD

There was one thing Tina says she had control over: her style. She designed and made all the costumes for her and her dancers at her shows, and her unique style is still influential to this day.

RESEARCHING THE QUEEN OF ROCK AND ROLL

Tina was ushered into the music industry as a teenager. Ike Turner, her manager and husband, subjected her to incessant physical and mental abuse. Ike  took complete control over her life while they were together, going as far as renaming her “Tina,”  formerly Anna Mae, after another girl he liked.

Despite this, Tina Turner became a worldwide sensation and the Queen of Rock and Roll. Her solo career soared to unprecedented heights, leaving a lasting impact that endures to this day. Yet, discussing her youth proved challenging, as it was effectively erased from her narrative once Ike assumed control.
